Update on Ibadan House of Horror: victims recount how they were kidnapped

Some victims rescued from the house of horror in the Soka area of Ibadan in Oyo, who have started gradually regaining their sanity, have recounted how they found themselves at the kidnappers den. 

Speaking with a Punch reporter, one of  the victims, Nafiu Shittu, said he was a busy selling his locally made pile medicine when he was kidnapped and brought into the forest 4 months ago.

"I am a native of Ibadan, living in the Foko area of the city. I sold pile medicine to people. I was doing the business on the day I was kidnapped about four months ago. After going round the area where I had customers, I felt tired and decided to rest in the Gate area. Suddenly, a bus stopped by my side and two men came out and forced me into the back seat of the vehicle. That was all I could remember. When I regained consciousness, I saw myself in a room in the forest, chained to a wall. I was too tired to struggle and as the days passed, I became frail because I was not given anything to eat."

Nigerians Are The 3rd Largest Spenders In The UK, Beats Russia and America

 Nigerians accounted for four percent of shopping in the United Kingdom in February, spending an average of 628 pounds per transaction.

The Nigerian share of UK’s spending may on the surface sound insignificant, but it has shot Nigerians ahead of Russians.

The Nigerians according to latest statistics by Global Blue were the third biggest spenders after the Middle East Arabs and Chinese. Russians now occupy the fourth place, though they also account for an average of four percent of UK shopping.

Russian spending in British shops fell by 17 percent last month compared to February 2013, according to tax-free shopping statistics out today. Spending by Nigerians however declined by 8 per cent in the month under review.

Visitors from Russia spent an average £669 ($1,103, 800 euros) per transaction, according to Global Blue, seeing them overtaken in third place by those from Nigeria compared to 12 months ago.

Spending by Russian visitors was up 16 percent for the year in 2013 but fell in February 2014 ....

PMAN Instructs Broadcasters Not To Pay Royalty To Nigerian Musicians [See Reason]

PMAN says artistes have right to choose the royalty collecting agency to join.

A body of performing musicians has asked Nigerian broadcasters not to pay royalty to musicians or a collecting agency until existing controversies are resolved.

The Performing Musician Association of Nigeria, PMAN, asked the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, BON, and Independent Broadcasters Association of Nigeria, IBAN, not to pay the Copyright Society of Nigeria, COSON, or its members, royalty until the Nigerian Copyright Commission, NCC, has registered the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria, MCSN.

A statement signed by PMAN’s caretaker committee chairman, Kevin Gabriel, called on NCC to obey the directive of the National Assembly in its Votes & Procedures of December 18, 2013 and legalise MSCN.

“The issue of collective management is confronting the industry right now. While the NCC is paying deaf ears and imposing only one society on Nigerian music makers and stakeholders, the National Assembly has directed the NCC to at once give due recognition to MCSN since Nigerian law does not provide for monopoly in the business of collective administration.

Breaking News: Unknown Assasilant Set Ekiti PDP Secretariat On Fire

Unknown assassins believed to be objected to the declaration and choice of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates, Mr. Ayodele Fayose for the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State has sent the Party's secretariat into flames.

A source in the state capital told Sahara Reporters this afternoon that the Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ocated along Ajilosun, Ikere-Akure road in Ado Ekiti, was in flames at mid-day causing panic amongst residents living close to the four story building.

This is coming four days after the controversial primary election of the party produced a former governor of the state, Ayo Fayose also known as 'Osokomole' amidst protest.

Many sources who spoke to Sahara Reporters revealed no clue to the cause of the fire yet but security has since been beefed up around the vicinity of the building.

A trader had narrated the incident to Sahara Reporters that residents close to the area raised an alarm when they sighted the mysterious fire which later attracted the fire service to put it out.

Boko Haram: Shekau claims responsibility for attack on Giwa Barracks, threatens to attack universities, Civilian-JTF

As security agents intensify search for Shekau, his members continue to launch attacks

Shekau said Boko Haram will attack the civilian JTF.

The Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, has claimed responsibility for the recent attack on Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri, describing it as a huge success.

Mr. Shekau, in a new video released Sunday, claimed that thousands of his detained supporters were released and are back in their jungle hideouts.

The video also showed a full footage of how the barracks was attacked in shots apparently carefully taken by one of the attacking members of the Boko Haram sect.

The video had chilling details of how easily the Boko Haram gunmen invaded the fortified Giwa barracks, having ample time until the eventual jail break that saw to the release of virtually all the detainees, most of whom were seen hailing the gunmen and chanting Allahu Akbar.

Even women and children among the freed detainees were seen helping the Boko Haram members with information about the cells and the barracks’ geography.

A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, whom an anti-graft agency says stole at least N416 million public funds while in office, is to be the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the June 21 governorship election in the state.

Mr. Fayose was on Saturday declared winner of the PDP governorship primaries in Ekiti.

Mr. Fayose emerged winner with 462 votes out of a total of 477 votes cast.

The leader of the PDP panel which conducted the primaries, Peter Odili, announced that the immediate past Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade, scored 7 votes.

Mr. Odili, a former Rivers State governor, said that Dayo Adeyeye came third with 3 votes while Modupe Ogundipe came forth with one vote.

He said a total of 544 delegates were accredited for the exercise, out of which four votes were voided.

Even though he seeks to govern Ekiti again, Mr. Fayose is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for stealing state funds during his initial stint as governor (2003-2006).

In December, a principal prosecution witness in the trial of Mr. Fayose told a Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, that Mr. Fayose lied on his asset declaration.

The witness, Abubakar Aliyu Madaki, told the court that the former governor lied in his asset declaration when he claimed that he had two buildings in Iyaganku area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Immigration Service Insists The Federal Government Did Not Give Order To Return Applicants’ Money

The Nigerian Immigration Service collected N1,000 application fee from almost 700,000 applicants who participated in the recently disastrous employment test that claimed more than 15 lives. There were reports recently that the federal government had directed the NIS to refund the money but according to new reports, no such directive has been given by the government despite the fact that the recruitment exercise was cancelled.

The Public Relations Officer of the NIS and a rep of the Minister of Interior said that they are yet to receive any directive to refund the money.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have called on the Federal Government to refund the money to the applicants. They should return it. It’s the decent thing to do.

About 20 bodies of people believed to have been killed for ritual purposes were discovered, yesterday, in Soka, Oluyole local government area of Oyo State. Also, 18 men and five women, believed to have been bewitched and bound with fetters in a dungeon, were found and rescued.

The rescued victims looked emaciated. One of the women was said to have been delivered of a baby who was sold to a waiting buyer among those who always thronged the secluded area at night to buy human parts. Some of the captives were too weak to tell their stories. It was gathered that some Fulani cattle rearers grazed their cattle in the bush around the area.

A suspect identified as Akeem Isiaka (38) was arrested in connection with the incident and taken to Sanyo Police Station. Containers and wells containing human parts including skulls were also discovered in the bush.

A woman, Titi Adeniyi, who managed to speak, said she had been held captive for more than two years.Another captive, Tunji Alabi, who said he was a bus conductor before he became a victim of the ritualists, could not say much.Oyo State Police Command PRO, SP Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor, said some arrests had been made over the discoveries.
