FG to create 3m jobs through agriculture

The federal government on Wednesday emphasised its resolve to create three million jobs through agriculture over the next five years.

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, stated this in a message to the ongoing Kaduna International Trade Fair.

Wogu, represented by Mr Clement Elu, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, said the National Directorate of Employment would play significant role in actualising government objective.

"Let me assure you that the directorate will step up operations in its agricultural sector interventions through the Rural Employment Promotion Initiative, as well as other job creation programmes."

According to him, the directorate has contributed immensely to the success of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda.

"In 2013, about 2,590 youths were trained in various agricultural skills and introduced into the main stream of economic activities in the 36 states and FCT.

"These new agro entrepreneurs were equipped with training, ranging from livestock production, aqua culture, micro-livestock farming, crop processing and agro allied services and businesses."

He urged the beneficiaries to key into the nations collective industrialisation vision.

In a welcome address, Alhaji Abdul-Alimi Bello, President, Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KACCIMA), said the fair was meant to bring investors together to generate new businesses and create employment.

Represented by Mr Garba Mshelia, the president said the aim was also to fast track national economic growth and development.

Ogun govt. bans street hawking by children

The Ogun government on Wednesday banned street hawking and trading by school-aged children during school hours.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Elizabeth Sonubi, announced the ban at a sensitisation rally in Abeokuta.

She warned that any child caught violating the order twice would be warned, and if arrested the third time would be remanded at the state juvenile home.

Sonubi said that the child would only be released after payment of a specified fine and presentation of tax receipts by his or her parents or guardian.

"We want every child to take opportunity of what they have now and ensure they acquire skills.

"We want parents and guardians to monitor their children as they are the leaders of tomorrow.

"If we take care of them, there will be peace in our homes, state and the nation at large," she said.

Sonubi implored parents and guardians to monitor the educational and moral development of their wards to enable them become productive citizens in the future.

This South African is Set to help Control The Spread of HIV and Unwanted Pregnancies by giving Prize money to Virgins.

A 29 year old south African, Rabelani Ramali (Pictured right) has launched a contest in SA where girls between 35 years and below would be given the sum of R100,000 plus medals, depending on their ages.

Rabelani who is a father of five children, by four women out of wedlock, says brought the idea to checkmate the rate of unwanted pregnancies and HIV cases in the country. He claims his NGO was registered in 2013 and is going to help out with this task.

Rabelani has contacted local doctors and health officials who would conduct the tests on the women, after which the whooping sum of R100,000 would be given to the winners. R100,000 to those between ages 31 and 35, R50,000 to those within 26 and 30 years, and R25000 to those in the ages of 21 to 25.

Nigerian Student Sentenced To Death In Malaysia For Drug Trafficking.

A 28 year old Nigerian student, Prince Bartholowmew Obitube, has been sentenced to death by a high court in Malaysia for trafficking drugs. The Shah Alam High Court yesterday Feb 26th gave the death penalty to Obitube after he was found guilty of trafficking cannabis, also known as m*******a.

The accused, a student with a private college in Kuala Lumpur, was arrested with 9,189kg of cannabis at Desa Satu Apartment, Gombak on Aug 20, 2011. According to the facts of the case, Obitube was caught by police from the Gombak Narcotic Crime Investigation Department, following a tip off, within the apartment area after he tried to run away with a backpack containing the drugs.

The offense, under the Dangerous Drugs Act in the country, provides a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

Federal Government Increases Passport Fee By 50%

The Federal Government has increased passport fee by 50%. According to a circular signed by the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Operations/Passport and released a few days ago titled ‘Passport Reforms’, applicants will now pay N15,000 instead of N10,000. (It was officially N10,000 but we all know how much we really paid…*sigh* Also applicants for change of data will pay now N30,000.

A newly introduced 64-page passport for frequent travelers will cost N20,000, while Passport for applicants 18 years and below will cost N8,750. It’s N15,000 between 18-60 and N8,500 for people above 60 years.

Female applicants, who apply for change of name as a result of marriage/divorce or deceased spouse, will pay N8,750, while processing fee for request for change of data will cost N30,000.

All payments will be made online going forward according to the circular.

Local media reports suggest retired farmer Dhaqabo Ebba's recollections of historical events place his date of birth in the 1850s

Reporters in Ethiopia say they have discovered the oldest man in the world, a farmer and community elder who could be 160 years old.

The state-run TV Oromiya published a 30-minute interview with Dhaqabo Ebba, whose vivid recollections of historical events and family tree indicate that he may have been born in the 1850s.

The journalist Mohammed Ademo, who has translated Mr Ebba’s remarkable story for the English-language OPride.com website, has suggested that the different government leaders the farmer remembers being ruled by would take him back at least 160 years.

Even today the majority of rurally-based Ethiopians do not possess birth certificates, and with the same applying to Mr Ebba it would be impossible to find any verification of precisely when he was born.

But the evidence from what the man can remember is compelling, according to Mr Ademo.

“When Italy [first] invaded Ethiopia [in 1895], I had two wives and my son was old enough to herd cattle,” Mr Ebba said to the TV reporter in the native Oromo language, at his house near Dodola town.

He also recalls the 8-day horseback trek it took to get from there to the capital of Addis Ababa – a journey which now only takes a couple of hours.

Mr Ebba has far outlived anyone of his generation, making it difficult to find someone to corroborate his story, but he claims to have the largest extended family of anyone in his region and has seen great-grandchildren grow up into adulthood.

It may never be confirmed definitively whether Mr Ebba is really as old as it would appear. No efforts seem to have been made to have him medically assessed or to call in representatives for the Guinness World Records.

The current holder of the organisation’s official accolade for oldest person ever is a French woman called Jeanne Louise Calment, who died in 1997 aged 122 years and 164 days.

Mr Ademo did say that he was working towards finding further proof of Mr Ebba’s extraordinary 160 years, and if anything concrete can be found it would smash the current record by a quite phenomenal margin.

Germany’s pirate party has condemned one of their members after she stripped off to reveal a slogan praising Bomber Harris – the RAF chief who ordered the Dresden bombings – painted on her bre*sts.

Pirate party members and people in the city said they were shocked by the fact that Dresden-based activist Anne Helm, 27, was one of those who staged the n***d protest just days after the anniversary of the brutal bombing.

A spokesman for the party leadership in Berlin said:

“This stunt was certainly not done in the name of our party and we distance ourselves from it. And more, we condemn it.”

Odunlade who is the winner of the Yoruba Movie Academy Awards started the construction of the project around Adibe axis, Abeokuta in Ogun State about a year ago, Encomium reports.

The former telecomms Ambassador, GLO was said to have raised the money for his projects from the endorsement deal and he's currently now with the Ogun State government.

According to Encomium magazine the hotel will be officially opened in two weeks.

Odunlade has however refused to confirm or deny the report when contacted.

Odunlade Adekola who has become a sought-after actor has acted in almost 100 movies and he is happily married to his wife, Ruth and they have three kids together.

Odunlade who recently went back to school to acquire a degree is currently a 100 level student at the University of Lagos.

NCC Bars MTN, Airtel, Glo From Selling SIM Cards

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has imposed fines in the total sum of N647,500,000 Million on three service providers, Airtel, Globacom and MTN Nigeria Ltd for failing to meet the Key Performance Indicators, KPIs, for quality of service in the month of January 2014.

Consequently, the three companies have been barred from selling SIM Cards with effect from 1st till 31st of March 2014, and are also barred from all promotions in their networks until they improve on the failed KPIs for which they are sanctioned.

The details of the sanction showed that Airtel Network Ltd, and MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd, are to pay a fine of N185 Million each while Globacom Ltd is liable to the tune of N277,500. In addition, each of the operators must pay the sanction amount on or before March 7, 2014, failure upon which each will be liable to pay N2,500,000 per day as long as the contravention persists.

The sanctions, which were communicated to the three operators in a letter signed by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Eugene Juwah, said the Commission will carry out an audit of the three companies on March 1, 2014 and also on March 31st, 2014, to ensure that no sale of new SIM Cards takes place in any of the three networks within the period.

The letter made reference to an earlier directive of December 10, 2014, which warned the operators that “if the Quality of Service does not improve by 31st December, 2013, the Commission will be compelled to direct operators to, among others, suspend the activation of new SIMs and subscribers until such an operator can prove that it has met the Key Performance Indicators specified in the Regulations”.

According to Dr. Juwah, “ the Commission after careful collation of statistics from the Network Operating Centres, NOC, of all major networks operators for the month of January 2014, has concluded that the service provided by some of the operators during the period fell below the Key Performance Indicators published by the Commission in the Quality of Service Regulations, as amended”.

Details of the sanction also indicated that Airtel failed on Call Setup Success Rate, CSSR, and SDCONG, while MTN failed on Call Setup Success Rate , CSSR and Drop Call Rate, DCR. On its part, Globacom failed on Call Setup Success Rate, CSSR, Drop Call Rate, DCR, and SDCONG.

The Key highlights of the sanction are that the concerned operators must adhere to the following conditions:

1. Payment of the fines shall be on or before March 7, 2014.

2. Failure to settle the said amount within the stipulated period, the operators shall continue to be liable to pay the sum of N2,500,000 ( Two Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira Only) per day for as long as the contravention persist.

3. To stop the sale of new SIM Cards throughout the month of March 2014, with effect from March 1 to 31, 2014.

4. The Service Providers shall not churn or delete inactive or ( None revenue generating SIMs) from their networks during the period of March 1 to 31, 2014.

5. The Service Providers shall not supply new SIM Cards from their warehouses or other sources to its Dealers or third parties throughout the period from March 1-31, 2014.

6. The Service Providers shall stop all promotions until the KPIs which have been identified in their respective networks are positively addressed.

The directive further warned that “any deviation or alteration of provisioning pattern ( in terms of average daily number of provisioning) in the remaining days of February 2014 compared to the regular provisioning rates by the concerned service providers shall be construed as a breach to the Direction.

Breaking News: Boko Haram Attacks Federal Govt College Yobe, Kills 29 Students

Men suspected to be members of the Islamic Sect, Boko Haram, today Tuesday Feb 25th launched an attack on students of the Federal Government College Buni-Yadi Yobe state, killing 29 students (or more), Hausa Service BBC reports. Some buildings in the school were also reportedly razed.

Sources at the school said the men invaded the school in the early hours of this morning while the students were still sleeping in their hostels and slaughtered them. Guns were not used in the attack as was the sect’s usual practice, probably to avoid the attention of people. They used machetes.

The Federal Government College Buni Yadi is a co-educational institution located some 55km south of Damaturu the Yobe State capital. This is the fourth attack on secondary schools since the inception of the sect members.

Emeka Ike Thrown Out Of Rented Duplex Over Failure To Pay N8.5million Rent

Nollywood Actor and school proprietor, Emeka Ike has been thrown out of his rented apartment in Magodo GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, over his inability to pay an accumulated three years rent of N8.5 million.

The apartment, a twin duplex located at 1, Raji Oladimeji Street, Magodo GRA, was until his ejection, used by Emeka to run his business.

Emeka had in 2007 diversified by establishing a secondary school named St Nicholas College and decided to hire the premises on a five-year lease agreement from an 87-year-old retiree, Chief Samuel Agboola Akintan at the rate of N2 million per annum for the first two years and N3 million annually for the remaining three years, bringing the total rent of five years to N13 million.

Sun newspaper reports that Emeka was able to get his landlord accept a deposit of N2 million with a promise to pay the rest later. Trouble, however, started when a year after moving in, the popular Actor began to default and at a point issued a dud cheque of N1.5 million.

To force Emeka to pay his money and eject him from the property, Chief Akintan through his company, Samak Investments Ltd, had to drag the Actor to the Ikeja Magistrate court where he was ordered out of the house.
